The Third Lever for Growth Hormone: What Sauna Research Actually Found

August 18, 20262 min read

Ask most people how to influence growth hormone naturally, and the answer will almost always be sleep, or training, or both. Both are correct — but they're not the whole picture.

The forgotten Finnish research

The most cited foundational work on this comes from Finnish researcher J. Leppäluoto and colleagues, whose 1986 study exposed healthy men and women to dry heat in a Finnish sauna (80°C) for one hour, twice daily, over seven days. Male participants showed a striking 16-fold increase in serum growth hormone on day one — though notably, that response diminished with repeated daily exposure, dropping to roughly a third of the initial spike by day three (Wiley/Acta Physiologica Scandinavica).

A separate, more commonly replicated protocol — shorter sauna exposure at high dry-bulb temperatures — has been associated with growth hormone increases in the range of 2 to 5-fold (200-500%) above baseline in a single session, a figure that shows up consistently across subsequent reviews of the sauna endocrine literature (Springer/European Journal of Applied Physiology).

Why this matters, and why it doesn't replace anything

A broader review of the endocrine effects of sauna bathing confirms that growth hormone and prolactin secretion are reliably increased by heat exposure, while other hormonal responses (like cortisol) tend to be more variable (ScienceDirect). None of this replaces sleep or resistance training as the primary drivers of growth hormone — but it does establish heat exposure as a legitimate, separate, and underused lever.

The practical takeaway

The magnitude of the effect depends heavily on temperature, duration, and how repeated exposure is structured — a single session and a multi-day protocol produce very different numbers. The exact structure for a sustainable, realistic protocol is laid out for free.
